REPORT ON THE APPLICATION OF PLAIN LANGUAGE IN TEXT PUBLISHED BY THE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION OF THE STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO
Abstract
The article describes the research carried out by the authors to see if the websites of the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat for Social Development and Human Rights, especially that of the Undersecretariat for Women's Policies, which are part of the Rio de Janeiro State Government's Electronic Portal, have simple, accessible and transparent language to inform citizens. To this end, the concepts of citizenship, transparency, readability, intelligibility, literacy, textual accessibility and readability were presented. The Plain Language movement, its evolution in Brazil, its guidelines and standardization by ISO were presented. The structure and language of the selected pages were described through observation, and the text to be analyzed was chosen. The Coh-Metrix Port tool was considered the best option for assessing the readability of the text and it was found that the original language was not simple, which could hinder the reader's comprehension. After the rewrite, the readability of the text improved. The research demonstrated the relevance of Plain Language in a country with high illiteracy rates and a diversity of schooling, to promote effective communication and a more inclusive society.
Keywords: Plain Language. Citizenship Transparency. Textual Accessibility. Readability.
